A consistent framework for every candidate

So Laguna’s election guide is independent public-interest voter information. Qualified candidates in the same race are presented through the same basic profile structure, source hierarchy and correction process. The guide does not endorse, oppose, rank or recommend candidates.

Editorial judgment—including what is newsworthy, sufficiently supported and useful to voters—remains with So Laguna. Contact with, access to or material supplied by a candidate does not imply support.

Source hierarchy

Primary records come first

1. Official public records: election documents, campaign filings, meeting agendas, minutes, videos and recorded votes.
2. Candidate-controlled material: campaign websites, official statements, questionnaires and direct written responses.
3. Established reporting and professional sources: used when they add necessary context and can be attributed clearly.

Third-party candidate directories, unattributed summaries and unsupported claims are not treated as verification. Links normally go to the original record so readers can inspect the evidence themselves.

Candidate-submitted material

Direct answers are labeled as direct answers

Candidates in the same race receive the same basic opportunity to provide biographical material, a photo and questionnaire responses. Candidate-submitted answers are labeled and published substantially as provided, with only minor formatting, length or obvious typographical edits. They express the candidate’s position and are not presented as independent verification.

Late responses may be added at any time. A pending response is described neutrally; silence is not interpreted as a position.

Verification and attribution

Facts, claims and unknowns stay distinct

Profiles distinguish official facts, candidate claims, reported information and So Laguna’s own synthesis. Language such as “So Laguna has not yet located” means a citable source was not found during review; it does not prove the information or position does not exist.

Positions are not inferred from party, affiliation, endorsement, attendance, silence or another person’s actions. Dates and “last reviewed” labels reflect the most recent substantive editorial check, not an automated timestamp.

Campaign finance

Official filings, with the reporting period explained

Finance summaries are compiled from official FPPC filings and City or County filing systems. So Laguna identifies the form and reporting period, links to the original filing, and notes when amendments or newer transactions may change a total. An accelerated Form 497 transaction report is not treated as a complete campaign total.

Residential street addresses, personal phone numbers and email addresses, signatures, account numbers and unnecessary banking details are excluded from So Laguna’s summaries.

Voting records

Only attributable public positions are counted

Voting records rely on official minutes, meeting video or the relevant public meeting portal. So Laguna publishes a position only when it can be attributed to the officeholder in the record. Attendance, discussion, membership on a body or participation in a consent calendar is not used to invent an individual position.

Routine procedural items may be excluded from voter-facing comparisons. When percentages or totals appear, the page explains the population being counted and links readers to the underlying record.
