Why are there dues?
So Laguna is a 501(c)(4) social welfare organization. Unlike many groups, we are focused on active advocacy. Your dues fund:
- Legal & Technical Expertise: Hiring consultants to review city plans (like the Fire Station or Water transition).
- Community Mobilization: Printing flyers, hosting Town Halls, and maintaining our digital alert systems.
- 100% Impact: We use Zeffy for our payments, meaning we pay zero processing fees. Every cent of your $30 or $50 stays right here in Laguna Beach.
Support Our Advocacy
Looking to go above and beyond? One-time or recurring donations help us bridge the gap for special projects, legal reviews, and community outreach. Every dollar stays in Laguna Beach and directly funds our mission to protect our coastal home.
Contributions to So Laguna are not tax-deductible.
So Laguna is a registered California 501(c)(4) non-profit social welfare organization. In accordance with our corporate bylaws, public memberships and annual contributions constitute a non-voting associate status. Membership fees are utilized strictly as operational support to fund hyper-local data infrastructure, public reporting, and civic monitoring assets. All corporate governance, director appointments, and operational voting rights remain exclusively vested in the Board of Directors and the designated corporate leadership.
Why are my dues not tax-deductible?
Because So Laguna is a 501(c)(4) social welfare organization, our primary mission is advocacy.
Under IRS rules, contributions to organizations that engage in substantial lobbying or political activity (like fighting for better fire station placement or influencing city-wide policy) are not considered “charitable gifts” in the same way a donation to a food bank or a church would be.
The Trade-Off: While you can’t deduct your dues on your personal income taxes, this classification gives So Laguna a much more powerful voice. Unlike a (c)(3) charity, which is strictly limited in how much it can lobby, our (c)(4) status allows us to:
- Directly Influence Policy: We can lobby City Hall and the Planning Commission without the “handcuffs” placed on traditional charities.
- Take a Stand: We can be a loud, clear, and unapologetic voice for the residents of Laguna Beach.
- Drive Change: Your money funds the legal and technical research necessary to challenge decisions that impact our property values and safety.
Note for Business Owners: If you are joining as a local business, your dues may be deductible as a business expense (advertising or professional dues). Please consult with your tax advisor to see if this applies to you.
