Empowering our community through conservation and safety

The So Laguna Neighborhood Association is proud to introduce the Smart-Scape Initiative, a proactive program designed to enhance the resilience of our neighborhood. Overview

The So Laguna Neighborhood Association is proud to introduce the Smart-Scape Initiative, a proactive program designed to enhance the resilience of our neighborhood. By bridging the gap between aesthetic landscaping and environmental responsibility, we are working to protect our homes from wildfire risks while significantly reducing our collective water footprint.

Our Mission

To provide residents with the resources, education, and financial incentives needed to transition traditional landscapes into “Smart-Scapes”—environments that are both fire-resistant and water-wise.

A wide variety of drought-tolerant succulents, agaves, and golden barrel cacti in a local nursery for the So Laguna water initiative.

Key Pillars of the Initiative

  • Wildfire Hardening: We are focusing on “Zone 0” and “Zone 1” defensible space, encouraging the removal of combustible materials and the introduction of ember-resistant hardscaping near structures.
  • Water Conservation: Through the use of drought-tolerant native species and smart irrigation technology, we aim to reduce outdoor water usage by up to 40% across participating properties.
  • Community Grants: We have recently applied for specialized funding to help subsidize the costs of professional landscape consultations and the purchase of California-native plants for So Laguna residents.
  • Educational Workshops: Quarterly sessions featuring local horticultural experts and fire safety officials to provide hands-on guidance for property owners.

Why This Matters

In our unique coastal-canyon environment, the threats of drought and wildfire are ever-present. The Smart-Scape Initiative isn’t just about changing how our yards look; it’s about ensuring the long-term viability and safety of our community.

Get Involved

We are currently seeking “Pilot Properties” to showcase the benefits of Smart-Scaping. If you are interested in transforming your landscape or volunteering for the committee.
