As local residents and passionate dog owners, we know firsthand that Laguna Beach isn’t just a stunning coastal getaway for humans—it’s a paradise for our four-legged friends! We’ve spent years walking our own pups along the sand, testing out the patios at local cafes, and utilizing the best local vet services. Whether you’re a fellow resident or a visitor planning the ultimate pet-friendly vacation, this guide covers everything you need to know about navigating Laguna Beach with your dog, straight from the locals.
1. Laguna Beach Dog Rules & Beach Hours
One of the biggest questions we get is, “Are dogs allowed on Laguna Beach?” The answer is a resounding yes! However, to keep the beaches pristine and safe, the City of Laguna Beach enforces specific rules depending on the time of year (officially outlined in the Laguna Beach Municipal Code Title 6: Animals).
Summer Season (June 15 – September 10)
Dogs are allowed on the beach before 9:00 a.m. and after 6:00 p.m. only.
Winter Season (September 11 – June 14)
Dogs are allowed on the beach at any time of day.
The Golden Rule: Regardless of the season, your dog must be on a leash (maximum 6 feet long) at all times while on the beach and in public spaces.
Local Expert Tip: Keep in mind that dogs are never allowed at Thousand Steps Beach or in any city park tot lots, regardless of the season!
Main Beach Boardwalk
If you prefer keeping the sand out of your shoes, the Main Beach Boardwalk is a fantastic place for a scenic walk. Just remember to keep your pup leashed, as it can get quite busy with pedestrians and runners!

Looking to let your dog run wild? Established in 1992, the Laguna Beach Dog Park (located in Laguna Canyon) was the very first dog park in Orange County!
